Position: Councillor’s Assistant (Caseworker – Transportation & Public Works - PT)
Salary: $34,800-$39,000/yr (part time, 21 hrs/week), commensurate with experience, flexible hours
Job Summary:
The caseworker position will be responsible for managing the daily casework of the councillor’s office relating to transportation, traffic, public works & infrastructure, and connecting residents with staff, services, or community organizations as needed.
This position will require maintaining internal and external relations, serving as a spokesperson/representative for the Councillor in dealings with residents, systems navigation, and building relationships with community partners. Some evenings and weekends may be required.
Description of Responsibilities:
- Receive and respond to telephone calls, emails, and letters from constituents, City staff, City Council members, and other elected officials from all levels of government. Constituents and other individuals may also visit the Councillor’s office in person to place an inquiry.
- Work with others to create and maintain systems and procedures consistent with responding to constituency work.
- Converse with residents via different mediums (phone, email, other) to obtain a clear understanding of the nature of the issue, using a high level of tact and diplomacy.
- Problem solve both independently and with coworkers to address issues quickly and effectively. Research and prepare background information for the Councillor as necessary. Become familiar with relevant City policy, programs, and resources.
- Track and compare traffic & transportation casework to identify patterns. Collaborate with colleagues on addressing root causes, identifying policy gaps, and leveraging existing resources.
- Maintain clear recording keeping and keep residents informed of issues.
- Occasional evening and weekend work may be required, as well as community site visits.
Education and Experience:
Post Secondary School Diploma
Degree in Public Administration, Public Health, Communications, or related program an asset
Experience or formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
Language, Certificates, and Licenses:
English oral, reading, and writing
French oral, reading, and writing an asset
Knowledge:
- The demographics of the Councillor’s ward and current initiatives and issues within the ward
- Policy initiatives and issues in committees chaired by the Councillor or on which the Councillor is a member
- Knowledge of City administrative structure
- Knowledge of City services and policies
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office
Competencies and Skills:
- Convey policy positions on complex and controversial issues
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Communicate effectively with a wide range of people, orally and in writing, often under circumstances where the other party may be in a highly emotional state
- Demonstrated initiative, requiring general direction only
- Attention to detail
- Ability to effectively work independently and within a team
Active transportation use (bicycle, scooter, etc.) an asset, specifically for site visits.
